Parks & Playgrounds
Free, open and the fastest way to burn off an afternoon.Free playground on the promenade, with sea views, a bike track and public loos.
Green riverside strip along the Liesbeek with walking paths and open lawns for a run-around. Kids can play in the river and hunt for tadpoles.
Swings and play equipment right on the Fish Hoek beachfront, at the catwalk end near Jager's Walk. The reason it works with small children is everything around it: the calmest swimming beach on the peninsula, a flat paved promenade for a pram, and cafés a few steps away.
Huge, free and beautifully kept: multiple playgrounds, biodiversity garden, outdoor gym. The Tot Lot for 1–6s is fully enclosed, so it is one of the few big parks where you can let a toddler loose; the adventure playground next door is for the 7s and up.

The iconic huts plus a small sandy beach with a tidal pool — lovely family spot that gets busy.
A hit with toddlers: shallow with a sandy bottom and not usually busy. No bathroom though, so plan around that.
Small, sheltered coves near Boulders — calm water and another spot where penguins turn up.
Great family-friendly beach where you can surf — warm water, shallow, gentle waves and surf schools that do kids' lessons, with the famous colourful huts for photos.
Popular family-friendly tidal pool with a small strip of sand and rock pools to explore at low tide. The water is slightly warmer and the pool is mostly sheltered from the wind.
A small strip of beach between St James and Dalebrook, reached through a subway under the railway near St James station. It's a surf spot named for its rip tides and big waves, so swim in the little tidal pool to one side rather than the sea. Toilets, parking and lifeguards.
The village beach at Kommetjie, with rocks to clamber over and views across the bay to the mountains. It's cold Atlantic water, so it's more for walks and rock pools than swimming; the Soetwater tidal pools just south along Lighthouse Road are the safer place for a dip.
Two-part tidal pool with a shallow splash pool for children and a separate deeper section for swimmers. Access is via a walkway beneath the railway line.
The “insider” move right next to Boulders: free, calm, boulder-sheltered swimming — and penguins regularly waddle across anyway.
White-sand beach sheltered from Cape Town's summer south-easter, with lifeguards during the Blue Flag season from December to March. The Atlantic water is cold, access is down steps and parking is limited, so arrive early.
The classic long stretch of white sand below the Twelve Apostles, with restaurants, ice cream and loos right across the road. There's a lawn with palm trees for shade, and a tidal pool at the southern end that's gentler for little ones. Read more
Easy Walks & Nature
Paths, forests and greenbelts that are flat enough for short legs.Arboretum and pine forest with wide, mostly pram-friendly paths, picnic spots and easy trails at the foot of the mountain. The arboretum stroll is flat and short; carry on up to Elephant's Eye and it is about 6 km there and back.
Flat, leafy riverside walking trail through Constantia — shady, easy and a much-loved dog-walking route. About half an hour end to end.
Beach walk and exercise routes along the coast. The city's classic pram highway: paved, with playgrounds en route, ending near the Blue Train Park. The paved stretch runs about 7 km from Mouille Point to Bantry Bay, so pick your turnaround.
Shady indigenous-and-pine forest on the mountain's slopes — gentle walks, streams and a dog-walking favourite. The full contour-path loop is about 7 km, but the lower forest tracks let you turn around whenever legs give out.
Forest walks and hikes: pine-forest paths and streams to explore. It is quite steep though. The waterfall and back is about 4.3 km.
A flat paved coastal path past the tidal pools and bathing spots along the coast — mostly pram-friendly. It runs about 3 km from Muizenberg to St James. Warning: you can get splashed by the waves! Sea life can often be seen as you walk. Read more
A tiny wetland loop around a pond — the perfect toddler-length 'walk', with turtles and ducks to see. Great spot for picnics too! The whole reserve is only 1.2 hectares, so the loop is short enough for the smallest legs.
Part of the same green-belt network as the Alphen Trail. These two are the flattest and shadiest of the lot. Each one takes about half an hour end to end.
Shady forest paths along a stream — very pram- and dog-friendly. Great for picnics and play. Lots of birds, fish and plants to see. The main loop is 2–5 km depending which path you take.
Flat waterside paths, great for families, with lots of birdlife to spot. The circular walk is just over 1.5 km, with picnic tables and two bird hides along the way.
The Helderberg's answer to the Sea Point promenade: a flat paved seafront walk running the 5 km length of Strand's beachfront. Easy with a pram and easy to cut short.
