A good course walks you and your birth partner through the end of pregnancy, the stages of labour, pain relief and interventions, caesarean birth, and the first weeks at home: feeding, sleep, nappies and when to call the clinic.
Most are run by midwives, registered nurses or lactation consultants. Group classes add something a book cannot: other couples due at the same time, and often a WhatsApp group that outlasts the course.

FAQs
How much do antenatal classes cost in Cape Town? ⌄
Group courses for couples mostly cost R2,100–R3,500, one-day courses about R1,200, and online courses from R650. The Zoe Project's classes at public maternity facilities are free.
Does medical aid pay for antenatal classes? ⌄
Some plans reimburse part of the cost or include an online course. Check with your scheme before you book.
Should my partner come too? ⌄
Yes, if they can. Most courses are priced per couple, and the labour and newborn sessions are as much for birth partners as for you.
