Huge white sand dunes on the West Coast, about an hour from town. Sandboarding is the family favourite, and kids can start from age 4. There's also 4×4 dune driving. Quad biking is self-drive from about 12 or 13, and younger kids can ride along with a guide. You book through an operator, such as Sandboarding Cape Town, Revolver Adventures or Cape Xtreme, and pay a separate reserve permit, which varies by activity. There are no shops at the dunes, just basic loos, so pack water and snacks.
Bring sunglasses, closed shoes and an ID for every adult, and expect to take half the dune home with you. 021 400 6000 is the City's line, not an operator's, and permit fees change — confirm the amount for your activity at the gate.
